Changing down problems

I'm getting occasional problems selecting lower gears when changing down. It usually happens trying to go from 5th to 4th, I then move onto 3rd (having slowed down more in the process of trying to engage 4th), then 2nd etc. Most of the time and with enough persuasion I can get it into 3rd or 2nd but I have come to a stand-still once.

Any thoughts what this might be and what can be done to remedy it?

Re: Changing down problems

Hello Grecian,

It seems to me, you need to replace the selector rod bushes at both end of the rods.

One, end, uses slightly bigger diameter bushes and the other end, slightly smaller.

Looking at your selector rod, just grab one of the rods and move this axially, if there is play in between the rod and the bush, you need to renew bushes. Renew the whole set. After renewal you will find the gear lever to be more positive and firm.

Do not dismiss to checking your gear box level whilst you are down there, correct as necessary.

Take your data card or chassis number, and if you can manage it, also your gearbox number to your M/benz dealer, they should be able to locate the bushes for you.

Regards,

Re: Changing down problems

Thanks. It's now getting stuck in reverse i.e. go backwards, move the stick into neutral, take foot off of clutch, stall. Or try to engage a forward gear and not be able to. The remedy seems to be to put it back in to reverse and out again.

What's the best way to get in to the box to check the selector rods and will the bits advertised here be of any use do you think? http://www.gwoa.co.uk/index.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=7794

Re: Changing down problems

Hi Tom the linkeage rods and related bushes are all external and easily accessable.. lay under the G' ..look up at the gearbox and you will se the linkeage rods...have somebody waggle the gear lever through the gears to help you identify the problem....the kit on offer includes the levers(expensive items) which seldom wear.....very easy job to do if you have a pit or lift otherwise all it is a bit close to your nose ...the rods can be rebushed on the bench/kitchen sink.... before you buy/change the bushes remove the gearlever gaiter in the centre console and lubricate (WD40 then light oil) the slide bar that the lever fits into...if dry it can bind as you move the gearlever and affect the gearchange selection.....it is spring assisted and biased to the centre position when in neutral and should return freely from first and second gear selection......
